Global Entrepreneurship Week at the University of Essex
Earlier this month we were delighted to be involved with The Big e: Start-up Workshops.
Andrew Diver, Head of Tax at Beatons, headed over to the University alongside Colin Low of Kingsfleet Wealth to run a workshop on the Financial Aspects of business for a bright and enthusiastic group of students who were bursting with ideas and motivation about starting up their own businesses and some who have already started this process already.
“At Beatons we feel that these events are extremely helpful for the students and play a vital role in guiding them into a brighter future, going about the structure of their business in the right way to save hitting trouble further down the line. We would all agree that in the light of the current economic climate and having seen businesses rise and fall in the local market it is essential that people out there who are looking to start a company are getting the right advice.”
Roger Beaton, Managing Partner, Beatons Group
The workshop covered not only examples of real-life practical challenges, typical areas of concern and error when starting your own business but also aspects as diverse as employing people, Tax/NIC, regulatory obligations. The students were also familiarised with the concepts of gross/net profits, effective pricing models/break-even points as well as financial ratios and cash flows and balance sheets.
“It is always a good sign when so many students stay behind for so long afterwards to ask the speakers more questions. I know a lot of the students took a lot away from the session.”
Charlie Wheeldon, University Student Employability & Enterprise Manager
